Biography

Clinical and Research Interests

Dr. Singer's clinical and research interests focus on family-based interventions for suicidal and cyberbullied youth; service access and service utilization; use of technology in education and clinical practice. Dr. Singer is interested in the interpersonal mechanisms that protect against or contribute to youth suicidal risk within families; how and why parents access services for their suicidal children; and how technologies such as podcasts and social networking sites can be used to disseminate information about prevention and intervention of youth suicidal behaviors, cyberbullying, and social work education and training.

2011 - 2012: Parents’ Experiences Seeking Help for Suicidal Youth (PI) Funded through the Temple University Faculty Senate Seed Money Fund ($3,000).

Qualitative grounded theory study of parents' experiences as they move through emergency psychiatric services to outpatient mental health services. Collaborating with Dr. Guillermo Otero, Medical Director of Germantown Hospital's Crisis Response Center. Pending IRB approval from Temple University (protocol #20176).

2011 - 2012: Telling the story of suicide: Metaphors and meanings in the stories of people who have survived a suicide or supported others through a suicidal crisis (PI). Collaboration with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts program and the Philadelphia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Analysis of stories by survivors of suicide or people who have supported someone through a suicidal crisis. Developing storytelling website as part of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program suicide prevention mural project. Temple IRB approval #20078.

2011 - 2012: Effects of youth suicidal behavior on family cohesion (PI).

Secondary analysis of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Collaborating with Temple Dept. of Public Health biostatistician, Eugene Komoroff, Ph.D., and Kate Musliner, MPH. Temple University IRB approval #13100. Findings presented at the annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education (2011).

2012: Social Work Students’ Knowledge of Evidence-Based Practices for Children and Adolescents (PI)

Pre-test/post-test design to evaluate whether use of the PracticeWise.com database increases students’ knowledge of evidence-based practices. Temple University IRB approval #13947. Findings presented at the annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education (2011).

2010 - 2011: Risk for suicide among college students in the health professions (Site PI – Temple University).

Multi-university survey of suicide risk among college students developed by Matthew Wintersteen, Ph.D. at Thomas Jefferson University. Online survey of students in the College of Health Professions and Social Work. Temple University IRB approval #13096. Presented results at the American Association of Suicidology (2011).

Completed Research

2007 - 2008: School Social Workers Perceptions and Experiences of Cyberbullying and Youth Suicidal Behavior. Co-investigator (PI, Karen Slovak, Ph.D). Funded by Ohio University Outreach and Regional Campuses. $7,085.

Collaborated in the development of a survey looking at cyberbullying, suicide training and diversity for school social workers in the Midwest. Findings presented at annual meetings of the Council on Social Work Education (2010), Society for Social Work and Research (2011), and the American Association for Suicidology (2011).

2007 - 2009: Only as a last resort: Pathways to mental health care for mothers and their children. Principal Investigator (dissertation).

Qualitative analysis using constant comparative method of 60 interviews of mothers with mental illness who brought their children to mental health services. Identified a four-stage pathway to care; seven reasons why mothers sought mental health services for their children; maternal attributions for child problems.
