Master of Science in Health Informatics

Designed for working professionals, Master of Science degree in Health Informatics (MSHI) is an innovative, interdisciplinary, and state-of-the-art program that focuses on the design, development, and implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems in health care. Temple University's MSHI is one of only five accredited masters degree programs accredited in the United States by the College of Accreditation on Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Health Informatics (HI) is the intersection of healthcare, information science, and computer science. The MSHI is focused on the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include computers, clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems. A career in HI combines interests in medicine, management, information technology, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.  Professionals design and manage health information systems which contribute to major improvements in the safety, quality, effectiveness and efficiency of care.

The program is offered in collaboration of the College of Health Professions' Health Information Management Department and the Management Information Systems Department of the Fox School of Business.

Classes are offered weekday evenings at Temple University's Center City Campus and at Main Campus in the state of the art Alter Hall.  Although some courses may be offered on-line or in a hybrid approach, the interaction between disciplines from both the faculty and student perspective is a key component of the degree.

The MS in HIM consists of 30 credits (10 courses) that can be taken on a part time evening basis at Temple University's Center City Campus and at Main Campus in the state-of-the-art Alter Hall. Coursework includes a work-related applied project and a graduate seminar. Topics include:

  • EHR: Ethical, Legal, and Advocacy Aspects
  • Leadership in the Health Professions
  • Database Design, Development and Data Analysis
  • Health Information Systems: Standards and Electronic applications
  • Information Systems: Modeling and Development
  • Management of Information Technology
