Social Work Continuing Education

The Center for Social Policy and Community Development manages the Social Work Continuing Education Program for Temple's School of Social Work.  CSPCD provides a number of workshops and professional development events, which are open to students, social workers, psychologists, therapists and the community-at-large.  Depending on the content, these events qualify for either CEUs or CECs.   There is a $17 charge per CEU or CEC certificate, made payable to Temple University.

What are CEUs?

Local education agencies (LEAs), state education agencies (SEAs), and some professional associations require employees/members to complete certain types of professional development activities. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded to provide evidence of the completion of these activities.  CEUs are not university credits.  With a traditional CEU, an employer or other organization must decide on an individual basis whether to honor the CEU from a training provider.

What are CECs?

A Continuing Education Credit (CEC) is a measure used in continuing education programs, particularly those required in a licensed profession in order for the professional to maintain the license.  Social Work CEC records are widely used to provide evidence of completion of continuing education requirements mandated for Social Work licensure renewal.   Events that have been approved for SW CECs must have training content equivalent to post-graduate level coursework; CECs are also not university credit-bearing courses.

External Requests for SW CEC Approval

Some external organizations seek SW CEC approval of professional development sessions that are offered outside of Temple University.  Temple CSPCD vets these requests on an individual basis.  A SW CEC Approval Committee, comprised of faculty and staff from the School of Social Work, reviews these requests on a periodic basis.  Requests should be submitted at least four weeks in advance.

If an organization is interested in this service, an inquiry or request should be sent to cspcd@temple.edu.
