Biography

Reinhardt Heuer is a full Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. He was a Ford Foundation Early Admission Scholar and received his Bachelor of Science degree in medical science at the University of Wisconsin. After working several years with severely physically and mentally challenged individuals at the Central Wisconsin Center he moved to New York City, was accepted as a Teaching Fellow at Brooklyn College and received his Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology. He received a Public Health Doctoral Study Scholarship and obtained his Ph.D. in 1970 in the joint Audiology and Speech Pathology program at the University of Oregon/University of Oregon Medical School.

Dr. Heuer has taught in the area of Speech-Language-Hearing at Temple University since 1970. He also holds Adjunct Professor status at Drexel University in the Department of Otolaryngology, Hahnemann Hospital, and is on the research staff of the American Institute for Voice and Ear Research. From 1990 2000, he left full time academia to work as a Voice Specialist in the practice of Robert T. Sataloff MD, DMS. Among his areas of specialized knowledge, Dr. Heuer is regarded an expert in voice therapy for M-F transsexuals, having clinical and research experience in this area for approximately 30 years. He directs the activities of the Voice Aerodynamics and Acoustics Lab in the department.

Dr. Heuer is on the editorial board of the Journal of Voice and is a member of the Voice Research Lab Directors Committee of the Voice Foundation of America. He has served as a reviewer for SBIR NIH panel and as a Site Visitor for the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Research Areas

Dr. Heuer’s primary areas of research interest focus on diagnostic procedures in the evaluation of voice disorders and vocal modification of transgendered individuals. He has written many articles and book chapters in these areas.
